  • New Jersey released its figures on Friday and the state’s sportsbooks handled $546.8 million (a 2.8% increase from July). PA’s MoM handle increase was 7.8%. Revenue for NJ sportsbooks hit $65.3 million, a 45% leap from last month and beating PA’s MoM for revenue. New Jersey and Pennsylvania sportsbooks were very similar in of hold. New Jersey sportsbooks’ win (hold) was 11.9% and PA sportsbooks was 11.6%.
  • FanDuel continues to maintain about 40% of the online sports betting market share in Pennsylvania. The sportsbook consistently takes about 38-42% of all bets placed online in PA despite increased competition.
  • September and the NFL season already shaping up to be big. It’s no surprise or a hot take that the NFL is main course for sportsbooks. After Week 1, GeoComply which sportsbooks use to where bets are placed, released data that showed it was an “unbelievable start.” Pennsylvania’s total number of geolocation checks leapt 29.7% to 15.3 million YoY. According to the data from GeoComply, Pennsylvania was second in legal US sport betting markets to only New York for geolocation checks.

PA casinos August takeaways

  • In an interview earlier last month with Casino Update, Parx Chief marketing officer Marc Oppenheimer said visitation rates are good, but business is down for slots. The August numbers showed a 10.7% YoY decrease in slot revenue for Parx. But Parx still remained the top PA casino for slot revenue in August.
  • Online casinos started arriving in Pennsylvania in the summer of 2019. There are now 18 online casinos in PA and many of them have a deep library of slots, table games, video poker and the popular live dealer. In August, PA online casinos had their fourth-best month ever, reaching $131.7 million in gross revenue. It was about a 6.6% MoM increase which shows that iGaming in PA still has room to grow.
  • Last month, Wind Creek Casino broke a Pennsylvania record for table games revenue with $23.6 million (42% YoY increase). What would it do for an encore? In August, Wind Creek eked out Parx and led the state for table games revenue with $17.7 million. However, it was a 6.2 YoY decrease.
